Medicare Supplement Plan F Reviews: A Comprehensive Look at Popular Providers

Medicare Supplement Plan F Reviews: A Comprehensive Look at Popular Providers

If you’re anything like us, you may want to know all the research and read all the reviews before you commit to a product. Medigap Plan F coverage is a hot topic right now, so we want to cut your research time and give you the scoop.

Without further ado, here are our honest reviews of the top Plan F carriers available today.

Who can sign up for Medicare Supplement Plan F?

If you turned 65 before January 2020, you have been allowed to keep your Medicare Supplement Plan F coverage, despite the fact that it has been discontinued for new clients.

This means that if you turned 65 after January 2020, you can’t join Medicare Supplement Plan F. However, if you were eligible for Medicare prior to 2020, you are still able to explore your options.

What does a Plan F cover?

Plan F has the most comprehensive coverage of any Medicare Supplement plan. The simplest way to explain Plan F is if Medicare approves the charge, Plan F covers the rest. You should have no out-of-pocket expenses with a Plan F as long the services you receive are Medicare-approved.

Medicare Supplement Plan F coverage includes:

  • Everything under basic and Medicare Plan A coverage
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance charges
  • Part A and Part B deductibles
  • Foreign travel emergency care coverage
  • Part B excess charges

Coverage will always be the same, but specific benefits will vary per company and your specific situation, including health and physical location.

1. Lumico: 5 stars

Though Lumico is primarily known as a life insurance company, they also offer Medicare Supplement Plan F coverage. If you have life insurance from Lumico and trust the company, then it could be beneficial to have all of your coverage in one place.

In addition, Lumico often has some of the most competitive Medicare Supplement rates. When we go price shopping, this company may be a serious contender for you!

We’ve worked with Lumico for several years and appreciate their great customer service and affordable premiums.

2. Central States Health & Life Co. of Omaha (CSO): 5 stars

Central States Health & Life Co. of Omaha (CSO) is a popular option for Medigap coverage. CSO is particularly competitive in the Midwest, often having the best Plan F rates around. They want your business, and their affordable premiums show it!

CSO also offers household discounts to make the Plan F premiums even more affordable. If you have multiple Medicare recipients in a household, this carrier may be right for you.

As always, we will do a full price comparison and factor in the potential discounts, but if CSO ends up being an option, we recommend them wholeheartedly!

3. ManhattanLife Assurance Company (MAC): 5 stars

As one of the oldest life and health insurance companies in the United States, MAC knows how to stand by seniors.

Further, ManhattanLife is primarily known for its life insurance. If you like to keep your policies in the same place, they are a great option.

4. Accendo/CVS Health: 5 stars

Accendo Medicare Supplement Plan F coverage is the new, hot-ticket item on the market. As an Aetna affiliate and a part of CVS Health, this company has a lot of trust in big insurance names to back it.

One of the best parts about Accendo is their substantial 14% household premium discount. If you have multiple people in a household on Medicare, this is a great company to consider.

5. Aetna: 5 stars

Aetna is a highly regarded insurance provider that has helped an estimated 39 million people with their health care coverage.

Aetna is a name most of us know and trust, and they often have very competitive rates on their Medicare Supplement Plan F.

As always, we will do a full rate comparison in your area, and the most competitive rates are the ones we will seriously consider. However, if Aetna makes the cut, it’s definitely a company worth exploring.

6. Capitol Life: 5 stars

Capitol Life has been a top pick for us for several years, not only for their great rates but for their hassle-free application process. Applying for Medicare Supplement insurance can often be a tedious process involving paperwork and multiple phone calls, but Capitol Life makes it easy.

They have a unique underwriting process that speeds up the entire process, and most decisions are made within the hour!

While Capitol Life isn’t available in every state, it’s definitely a strong carrier to consider if it’s offered in your area.

7. Great Southern Life: 5 stars

Great Southern Life Insurance Company has been protecting Americans for over 100 years. This company originated in the life insurance space but have since expanded to offer Medicare Supplement coverage as well.

This lesser-known brand has plenty of excellent reviews. Because of the different operations offered according to each state’s laws, be sure to check with your agent on the specific benefits accessible based on where you live.

8. Mutual of Omaha: 5 stars

Mutual of Omaha has always been a popular Medicare Supplement company. Most people know of them, and you may have even had an insurance policy with them before!

While Mutual of Omaha isn’t always the most competitively priced, there is something to be said for the brand name. We offer Medicare Supplement insurance from dozens of companies, and if you prefer this name over the others, we can accomodate you!

9. Cigna: 5 stars

Cigna is a worldwide company that offers a variety of different plans. Though you will get the same coverage with every Medicare Supplement Plan F, there are different benefits and payment amounts that will vary based on your age, location, physical health and more.

If you are looking to cover other members of your household on your Medigap Plan F, Cigna is a fantastic option. Cigna’s 7% household premium discount is available for qualified applicants and is worth looking into.

Unfortunately, the discontinuation of Medigap Plan F still applies to the household coverage. The other person you are looking to add must also be eligible for Medicare before 2020.

10. Blue Cross Blue Shield: 5 stars

Blue Cross Blue Shield is another well-known insurance name, offering some peace of mind that you’re getting coverage from a company you trust.

While their rates are typically not as competitive as the other carriers on this list, we can still look at what they have to offer when we do a personalized comparison for you.

Blue Cross Blue Shield also has a Well-Being Program you might be interested in, which includes:

  • Welvie, an online surgery decision guide
  • Free access to the 24-hour Nurse Line
  • Blue365, a member discount program
  • Exclusive well-being webinars

11. Humana: 5 stars

Humana, another well-known name in the insurance industry offers a variety of Medicare Supplement plans. Similar to other popular brands, their rates are not always as competitive as the other carriers on our list.

However, if you know and love the Humana name, we will let you know what their Plan F rate is in your area so you can make an informed decision!

12. UnitedHealthcare: 5 stars

Last but not least is perhaps the most popular insurance company of all – UnitedHealthcare. UnitedHealthcare has been around since 1974 and is the single largest insurer in the United States.

With their solid reputation, UnitedHealthcare is a great option for Medicare Plan F, but their rates are typically some of the least competitive. We can always do a side-by-side rate comparison so you can weigh the pros and cons of what you get for the price.

Remember that a Plan F is a Plan F – the benefits are the same regardless of which company you buy it from. That’s why it’s so important to go price shopping, and we can help with that at no additional cost to you.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, all of these trusted providers get a five-star review from Medicare Allies. The best part about our agents is that we are not affiliated with any company. Our only goal is to get you the best possible coverage, for the best possible price.

Because each Medigap Plan F has the same benefits, it’s important to speak to an agent who can narrow down your specific situation regarding age, health, and location to see which company is right for you.
